World Cup marks start of road to Rio

World champions and recent FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix winners USA will be among the favourites to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games when the top twelve women's teams play the FIVB Volleyball World Cup Japan 2015

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 29, 2015 - Volleyball is set to be the highlight of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games – and the impressive final round of the FIVB Volleyball World League at the Maracanazinho in July offered a tantalising taste of things to come. The qualifying process for the summer games now gets underway with the FIVB Volleyball World Cup Japan 2015.

The best women's teams in the world will compete in Japan from August 22 through to September 6. The men's tournament will follow from September 8-23.

Only Brazil are guaranteed a place at the Olympics, as hosts. A further eleven men’s and women’s teams will earn places at the competition over the next few months - the first two tickets to Rio are up for grabs at the World Cup in Japan, which features twelve teams from across the globe in both the men’s and women’s competitions.

In the Women’s World Cup, hosts Japan are joined by world champions USA, World Championship silver medallists China and Korea, who are the best-placed Asian teams in the world rankings, as well as European champions Russia and Serbia via the European rankings, Argentina and Peru from the South American qualifier, the Dominican Republic and Cuba from the NORCECA Champions Cup, and Kenya and Algeria from the African Championship. The favourites are the two finalists from last year’s FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship Italy 2014 – USA and China.

The men’s competition sees hosts Japan line up against world champions Poland, Iran and Australia as the best-placed Asian teams in the world rankings, Olympic gold medallists Russia and Italy via the European rankings, Argentina and Venezuela from the South American qualifier, the USA and Canada from the NORCECA Champions Cup, and Egypt and Tunisia from the African Championship.

USA, who finished third in this year’s FIVB World League, Poland, Russia and Iran are the teams most fancied to secure the two tickets to the Olympics.

The next stops on the road to the Olympics are the four Continental Olympic Qualification Tournaments (COQT) for both men’s and women’s teams. The winners of each of the four Continental Olympic Qualification Tournaments (NORCECA, CEV, CSV, CAVB) will also book places in Rio. Berlin (men) and Ankara (women) will host the tournaments in Europe.

The qualifying process concludes with two World Olympic Qualification Tournaments (WOQT) per sex. The first tournament in Japan is combined with the Asian Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament (round robin format), with four tickets to the Olympics up for grabs. The eight teams that will participate are: the second-placed team at the 2015 NORCECA qualification tournament, the second and third-placed teams at the 2015 CEV qualification tournament and the second-placed team at the 2015 CSV qualification tournament. They are joined by four teams from Asia. The three highest ranked teams at the first WOQT and the best Asian team will qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games.

The destination of the last of the twelve Olympic tickets for men and women will be decided at the second World Olympic Qualification Tournament. The four teams in action will be the third-placed team at the 2015 NORCECA qualification tournament, the third-placed team at the 2015 CSV qualification tournament, and the second and third-placed teams at the 2015 CAVB qualification tournament. Commenting on the road to Rio de Janeiro in 2016, German coach Vital Heynen said: “Qualifying will be incredibly difficult – almost more difficult than it will be to win a medal in Rio.”

The volleyball competition at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will be a huge party. The demand for tickets is greater than any other sport, and the organisers expect every match to be a sell-out.

Speaking after the final of the FIVB World League, which served as a test event for the Olympics, FIVB Secretary General, Fernando Lima, was very impressed. “I am very pleased. We saw a high technical level of competition combined with great participation from the public who gave their full support - despite Brazil not being among the four finalists. It was great to test the challenge system, which is indispensable for the sport today, and also the LED net, which will ensure that the competition is as dynamic and exciting as possible for volleyball fans at the Olympic Games next year. As the President Ary Graça says, volleyball seeks continued innovation.”

Doug Beal, CEO of USA Volleyball and coach of the first United States team to win men's volleyball Olympic gold in 1984, said: "Maracanazinho is a great setting for players and will provide a sensational stage for Olympic volleyball in 2016. Athletes from around the world love to play here at this historic venue and the Brazilian fans know volleyball very well. Volleyball will be one of the most popular sports at Rio 2016 – and with the battle for medals fiercer than ever before, we are sure to witness one of the best Olympic volleyball tournaments of all time."
