USA begin World Cup campaign against Korea

 

Head-to-head
·    These teams will meet for the ninth time at the World Cup. United States won five of the previous eight, including the last three.
·    United States only failed to win a set against Korea in their first ever meeting in the competition in 1973.
·    At the 2012 London Olympic Games these teams met in the semifinal which was won by United States in straight sets. The Americans lost the gold medal match to Brazil while Korea failed to claim the bronze medal against Japan.
·    Korea's last win over United States in any major international competition came at the 2005 World Grand Prix when they beat United States in five sets in the preliminary round.

United States
·    United States will partake in their 10th World Cup. They finished on the podium in the last three editions, third in 2003 and 2007 and second in 2011, and therefore qualified for the Olympic Games.
·    The Americans also qualified for the Olympic Games at the 1991 World Cup with a fourth place as the Top-3 already earned their berth for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.
·    United States are one victory shy from becoming the fifth team with 50 wins at the World Cup, after Cuba (65), China (64), Japan (63) and Brazil (53).
·    United States lost their last match at the World Cup - 3-0 to Japan - and can lose back-to-back matches in the competition for the first time since 2003.

Korea Republic
·    Korea Republic are one of two teams to have participated in every edition of the World Cup, alongside Japan.
·    Korea's best result in the competition came in the first two editions (1973 and 1977) when they finished in third place.
·    In 2011, they claimed a win in their last match against Argentina (3-0). They can win back-to-back matches in the World Cup for the first time since 2007.
·    Korea have lost their last six matches in the competition that went to five sets. Their last win in a five-setter came against United States in 1999.
