Russia aim to bounce back against Peru

 

Head-to-head
·    Russia and Peru will meet at the World Cup for the first time since 1999. The have met seven times in the competition with Russia (including Soviet Union) leading with five wins to Peru's two.
·    Both of the Peruvian wins came in the 1977 edition of the World Cup with two straight set wins.
·    Russia won the very first meeting in 1973 (3-0) and the last four encounters - 1985 (3-0), 1989 (3-0), 1991 (3-1) and 1999 (3-0).
·    Russia won the last two match-ups with Peru in any major international tournament - two straight set wins at the 2011 World Grand Prix.

Russia
·    On Monday, Russia suffered their first loss at this World Cup, a 3-2 defeat against Serbia. This was only their second defeat in their last 19 World Cup matches and their first since a 3-0 loss against Cuba in 1999.
·    It was the first time Russia (incl. Soviet Union) lost a five-set match at the World Cup (W4-L1).
·    They could lose two World Cup matches in a row for the first time since 1985, when they lost to Cuba and China, both in straight sets.
·    Nataliya Obmochaeva scored 27 points against Serbia, including 24 from 42 spike efforts.

Peru
·    Peru followed up a 3-0 win over Algeria in their World Cup opener with six defeats in a row, including  five in straight sets.
·    Peru can now lose seven successive World Cup matches. They lost eight in a row at the 2007 World Cup.
·    On Monday against Dominican Republic (3-1 defeat), Peru won their first set since their 3-0 win against Algeria in the first matchround of the 2015 World Cup.
·    Katherine Regalado scored 18 points against Dominican Republic, including 15 from 41 spikes efforts.
