China and Serbia on road to Rio

 

China celebrate their victory against Japan on Sunday

Lausanne, Switzerland, September 7, 2015 - The 12th edition of the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Cup crowned China on Sunday. Coach Lang Ping's team and runners-up Serbia are the first two teams to qualify for the women's volleyball tournament at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. They join hosts Brazil.

China secured their fourth World Cup title and a berth at the Rio Olympic Games with a 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22) victory over competition hosts Japan and a 10-1 win-loss record at the competition.

Serbia also clinched a ticket to the Rio Games after holding off Argentina 3-2 (25-16, 25-19, 20-25, 23-25, 15-4) in a five-set thriller to settle for the second place in the 12-team round robin tournament.

Olympic qualification process
As hosts, Brazil were automatically qualified for the Olympics. They will now be joined by China and Serbia - the top two teams from the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup Japan 2015 - who will take on the five winners of each Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament due to take place within the period from December 23, 2015 to January 10, 2016.

The qualification tournament for Asian teams will also double as a World Olympic Qualification Tournament and will take place in Japan between the periods of May 14 to June 5, 2016. The top three ranked teams from Asia according to the FIVB Women’s world ranking will be joined by the second and third placed teams from the European Olympic Qualification Tournament, and the second placed team from the South American Olympic Qualification Tournament and the second placed team from the NORCECA Olympic Qualification Tournament. The best ranked Asian team and the top three ranked teams from this tournament will qualify for the Olympics.

The final vacancy will be decided at the Intercontinental Olympic Qualification Tournament due to be held in the period from May 14 to June 5, 2016. The third placed team from the South American Olympic Qualification Tournament, the third placed team from the NORCECA Olympic Qualification Tournament and the second and third placed teams from the African Olympic Qualification Tournament will compete for the final berth.
