At the 2015 World Grand Prix, Argentina won their first match of the tournament against Croatia but lost the subsequent five games to finish seventh of eight teams in Group 2. Argentina guaranteed their fifth World Cup appearance by winning the South American qualifying tournament in June 2015. After finishing eighth in the inaugural World Cup in 1973, they had to wait 26 years for their next appearance in the competition. They would go on to finish 11th in 1999 and 2003, before improving slightly to finish 10th in 2011. Argentina finished joint-17th at the 2014 World Championship in Italy. Their only win was against their pool’s bottom side Tunisia. Their previous appearance in volleyball's premier competition was in 2002 when they also finished in joint-17 position.
Known as Las Panteras (The Panthers), Argentina have never competed at the Olympic Games but recently they have become regulars in competitions on the international stage. They have competed at every World Grand Prix since 2011, recently finishing fifth in Group 2 in 2014. They are consistent medallists at the South American Championships but have struggled to overcome regional powerhouses Brazil. They have collected six silver and 12 bronze medals in the competition's history.
